Can More Spending Help the Economy?
Last night, Pres. Obama took to the airwaves to plead his case to Americans with regard to the long-awaited, embattled economic stimulus package. In case you didn't catch it, below you can find video of the press conference. It sounds like Obama is really laying it out on the table for Congress. Tax cuts for the wealthy alone won't solve the problems, he emphasizes again. Rather, he continues to push for things like tax incentives for the middle class and working class, laws that would extend peoples' unemployment and healthcare benefits, and massive projects that he says will improve the nation's infrastructure and create more jobs.
Obama also notes that if passed, the stimulus package would be subject to unprecedented transparency and accountability as spending would be displayed online so that Americans can see just how their money is being spent.
Although he even admitted the bill isn't perfect, he claims it has been stripped of all pork. As Congress continues to wrangle over the details of this scheme, Obama reminded listeners that inaction by lawmakers would be the worst consequence of all.
Now, America and the world awaits word from the Treasury department on a new bank bailout that some are saying won't be much different from Pres. Bush's plan.
In light of all that's happening, what are your feelings on what Obama proposed? Will such measures truly help the economy? And what will a second bank bailout really do? Feel free to chime in below.
