Overview: Cloud computing has emerged as a technology almost every industry that provides or consumes software, hardware, and infrastructure can leverage. The technology and architecture that cloud service and deployment models offer are a key area of research and development for geographic information system (GIS) technology.

GIS in the Cloud provides an overview that includes a definition of cloud computing and discusses the differences between the three core cloud service models - Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (Iaas). By way of example, the author clearly specifies the differences between the models.

The popularity of cloud computing has increased dramatically because of the many and varied benefits it offers. This eBook includes a discussion of common benefits achieved by leveraging the cloud, and includes an analysis of deployment options: public, private, and hybrid cloud.

Given the concerns cloud computing raises in regard to security, a discussion of risks in the cloud explores the aspects of cloud computing that must be considered and addressed in order to meet requirements appropriate to the security of one's organization and IT environment.

GIS in the Cloud includes a specific discussion of Esri's ArcGIS technology, focused specifically on its content and services that are available in the cloud. The offering includes SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS solutions, providing cost-effective and flexible opportunities for organizations to deliver and consumer GIS content and services.
