Overview: Today's retail banks are run for bankers, with a focus on processing transactions and containing risk. Of course, that means that banks have reaped what they've sown. To consumers, a bank is little more than a place for storing and transferring money. That perception mattered little until recently, when Internet-only banks, mobile payment services, and nonbank transaction providers like Google Wallet and PayPal began eating into banks' core transaction business.
