The Wall Street Journal reported today that multiple World Bank officials were alerted this week to beware an email virus purporting to be from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

The paper says the virus was detected in an attachment sent to several World Bank officials in what appeared to be an email from Treasury undersecretary for international affairs Lael Brainard. The email claimed the attachment was a letter from Secretary Geithner.

"We are aware that 'phishing' attempts are getting more sophisticated, and we work hard to protect our security," a World Bank official told the Wall Street Journal. "The Bank has not had any breaches of its system based on recent phishing attacks."

Treasury Department spokeswoman Natalie Wyeth told the paper, "the phishing attempt was detected quickly and the World Bank has since alerted their staff to be aware of this new trend of cyber attack."
