Protecting Data During a Major Merger

First Tech Credit Union and Addison Avenue Federal Credit Union leverage Websense Triton to help protect a large amount of data during and after their interstate merger.

Set for Expansion

Scaling up the solution for the merger only meant expanding the subscriptions for Websense Data Security Suite and growing the Websense Web Security Gateway deployment with the purchase of six Websense V-Series appliances. The biggest challenge from an IT perspective, says Romero, was making sure everybody was on the same page in terms of communication and security needs. "After that, getting the configuration to support the extra protection needs was fairly simple because we agreed upon the structure of the security requirements," he says. "Fortunately, because both companies had DLP systems in place, we already had the management buy-in and need to support this functionality. So it wasn't as challenging as it could've been in an organization that didn't already have that kind of functionality," he adds.

Acquiring six appliance devices set First Tech Federal Credit Union to be able to expand without having to add additional security resources for quite a while. "We could've gotten away with one device at each of our locations, based on our current performance needs, but we bought two devices for each of our locations, for performance consistency and redundancy," explains Romero. "Also, having two devices gives us a really good base to grow from. We're not really even taxing our current systems at this time."

First Tech Federal Credit Union was able to successfully protect all of its its data and remain in compliance with regulations during and after the merger not only thanks to the security technology it chose, but to its IT staff. "We've got some really good people in house to not only help secure the security infrastructure, but the IT infrastructure in general," says Romero. "Technology isn't a solution, it's a tool and resource to meet business objectives. There's no silver bullet with regard to the technology being purchased. We have to manage our systems to meet our company objectives."
