Sovereign Bank's Growth

Bank turns to virtual tape library for data backup needs.

Sovereign Bank (Philadelphia, $47 billion in assets) has purchased four SEPATON (Southborough, Mass.) S2100-ES Virtual Tape Library systems - one for each of its four data centers. Having recently grown from less than 100 branch locations to more than 525 community banking offices, Sovereign needed to install a data backup and recovery solution that would scale incrementally and cost-effectively, while enabling performance scaling as well, according to Joe Ambrosino, the bank's corporate networking operations manager.

The system, which was deployed in December, is disk-based, and the speed at which the bank's tapes are duplicated has increased four-fold, Ambrosino says. "Data restores are performed much more easily because, with virtual tape, the data is still on-site," he explains. "Rather than sending someone to physically retrieve a tape from a safe, the bank now backs up to a virtual tape library and keeps up to two weeks of backed-up data on hand for easy retrieval."

Organizations like Sovereign Bank routinely need to restore test data - with the SEPATON appliance, the recovery process is consistently up to 10 times faster than with the former traditional tape method, the vendor says. Additionally, the SEPATON S2100-ES is compatible with Sovereign's existing backup systems. Sovereign Bank's staff had backups under way within three hours of the product's arrival, with no changes to its existing environment, Ambrosino says.
