That's absolutely true that the tech applications haven't matured yet, but I think the feeling among many in the industry is that they are going to mature quicker than previously thought because of the customer demand. Also, although the finserv providers have to deal with regulations, I've seen some research a while back that shows that regulations are one of the top reasons that customers trust banks more than retailers, tech and social media providers, etc.

Problem is many of the technology applications are not matured. Banks and Financial services providers need to comply with regulations more strictly than Retailers or, Social media providers. Definitely, the ownership of consumer relationship can be an advantage.
