The Rise of the Business Analyst and Other Emerging IT Roles

Emerging roles at banks put business and IT on the same page.

Educational Resources for Business Analysts And Project Managers

Project management as a discipline has been more formally defined than the work of business analysts, says Kathleen Barret, president of the International Institute of Business Analysis and senior business consultant with Bank of Montreal Financial Group. But the IIBA is working to rectify that, she adds.

The IIBA is a professional association for business analysts established in March 2004 and incorporated in May 2006. The association is centered around maintaining a professional body of knowledge and accepted practices, professional recognition of qualified business analysts and networking, Barret says.

In less than three years, the IIBA's membership has grown from two dozen to more than 4,000 members across 40 countries. Barret estimates that about 5 percent of IIBA's membership is in financial services. "This is one of the hottest jobs right now," she says. "It's here to stay." --N.F.

The Project Management Institute is the leading professional organization for project managers. It is more established than the IIBA, with more than 220,000 members across 160 countries. But then again, it's been around for 36 years.

PMI is actively engaged in advocacy for the profession, setting professional standards, conducting research, and providing access to a wealth of information and resources. PMI also promotes career and professional development, and offers certification, networking and community involvement opportunities.

Because of its large membership, PMI maintains specific interest groups, or SIGs, to address the unique challenges faced in different industries. PMI maintains a financial services SIG whose members participate in activities such as networking, establishing standards and practices, developing technical papers and working on special projects. --N.F.
