One nice thing about the boring business of research and numbers crunching is that without trying to get some answers, the process makes discoveries that appear out of nowhere. Here are some examples:• The top six core vendors had combined revenue of $10.71 billion in 2009. • 15,796 financial institutions spent $76.05 billion to drive their IT. • 85% of the total FI population uses a core system from one of the six core vendors. • Should core vendors be satisfied with only 14% of the spend? • The four giant banks spend $35.6 billion on IT. • Each of those banks spends twice as much on IT as the largest core vendor earns in revenue. • Are core vendors slackers in the business of creative selling? • Are core vendors mining every ounce of gold in them thar hills? • Are IBM Global Services and Accenture eating Fiserv and FIS's lunch?

There are a couple of acquisitions left, but after that, the name of the game is organic revenue, and the approach to that game is.............
