Yes, I think when you are asked to donate to donate at the checkout people usually leave a dollar just not to seem cold-hearted. ATM donations to have the potential to be bigger.

Supermarkets often ask shoppers to donate to charities and local food pantries. The ability to donate from the ATM is more efficient, and as Zarna said, may lead to more generous contributions.

I like this MUCH more then donating at the checkout of grocery stores. I Definitely a great idea for banks to give back to the community. It's also just nice to see that I have X amount in my account so that I can give more to a charity than just the dollar I happen to have in my pocket.

re: U.S. Bank Accepting Military Support Donations
We've seen several cases of banks enabling their ATMs to accept donations in recent years -- like with Sandy last year -- this is not only good for the bank's image, but also to make it easier for consumers who may feel compelled to donate to a good cause.
